Asphalt Care and Maintenance in Virginia

Asphalt Sealing should be done approximately every 1-2 years to protect from damage done by the sun, water, gasoline and oil spills.

  1. Pavement should be kept clean. Loose gravel, tree branches, etc: can gouge a new driveway when run over by vehicles and cause raveling.
  2. Do not work on cars or change oil on the driveway. Oil dissolves asphalt and jacks can cause indentations.
  3. Edges of driveway should be backed filled against, this adds extra support, this is very important. Your driveway edges could deteriorate if not.
  4. Because asphalt is susceptible to damage from petroleum spills, oxidation from the sun, moisture penetration, and the freeze-thaw cycle it should be seal coated between 1 and 6 months after installation and every 1-2 years thereafter.
