Asphalt Care and Maintenance in Virginia
Asphalt Sealing should be done approximately every 1-2 years to protect from damage done by the sun, water, gasoline and oil spills.
- Pavement should be kept clean. Loose gravel, tree branches, etc: can gouge a new driveway when run over by vehicles and cause raveling.
- Do not work on cars or change oil on the driveway. Oil dissolves asphalt and jacks can cause indentations.
- Edges of driveway should be backed filled against, this adds extra support, this is very important. Your driveway edges could deteriorate if not.
- Because asphalt is susceptible to damage from petroleum spills, oxidation from the sun, moisture penetration, and the freeze-thaw cycle it should be seal coated between 1 and 6 months after installation and every 1-2 years thereafter.
